Mother of Pearl Scrimshaw Étrange Token Charm Necklace - Calliope Necklace
Sometimes necessity is the “Mother of Invention” and such is the case with this delightful necklace. Having had great success with a customized necklace made in the style of Georgian era theatre tokens - I was on the lookout for design elements that might create a slightly similar genre when these charms first came to my attention. Mother of pearl was always on the list of possibilities and upon finding this cache of scrimshaw étrange designs, this new pastiche has finally come to fruition.
Eight Victorian scrimshaw-styled sketches on Mother of Pearl tokens are incorporated into this adorable necklace. All have some meaning and a few are just pretty designs. The swallow represented a safe return home and faithfulness during the Victorian era / The swirly heart is simply a pretty design / the bee represents “Queen Bee” as well as the French Napoleonic symbol / the crossed fingers of a lady’s hand represent “Good Luck” / The gaming queen represents the “Queen of Hearts” / the crown signifies royalty / the Fleur de Lis is of French origin and the clever “Bee M’Eye Heart” (Love), obviously was a forerunner of today's emoji craze!
All of these clever designs are transferred onto Mother of Pearl charms and their striking black and white designs, compliment the alternating links of the blackened rhodium and gold vermeil chain. The delicate rustling of the charms is utterly mesmerizing and gently draws attention to this uniquely fabulous necklace.
